Here we go not the best photos .As you can see where an extra hole can be drilled they have , under the Star badge you can see the original gilt colour .I replaced the chinstraps with some newer ones but they are not quite as thick .I am sure it could be rebuilt by a restorer but I will leave that up to the next owner I will probably end up swapping it for a para helmet . There are more numbers under the cockades .The helmet is stamped CE JUNCKER .Rob.

Hi Rob,

Now, thats a neat Garde du Corps Kurassier metalhelme.
Yours is very interesting. It seems that your GdC helmet is an EM helmet, the officer's parade eagle is silver coloured with a gilded crown, whereas the EM is the other way round or all gilded with an oval (football shaped) spike base.

But you have a spare officer spike base, tho. with the clove leaf shaped spike base.

Rob, thats a neat GdC/Garde-Kurassier-Regt, these 2 regts used the identical helmet. I am really envious, darn, all those for 140 Pound??? bash.gif dry.gif

You know what, I was overjoyed when I read yr post ".I am sure it could be rebuilt by a restorer but I will leave that up to the next owner", but then all hopes vaporized when the I read the next sentence "I will probably end up swapping it for a para helmet ". Darn! lamo.gif LoL

It seems that CE Jucker was one of the main metalhelme manufacturer, my M15 Jaeger zu Pfferde metalhelme was also made by CE JUNCKER, but my M15 kurassier was made by Helbing u Sackewitz.

And your GdC shadowed all those 00009176.gif
Wow, our forum pickelhaube section is really something, we have a GdC among us, guys!

Thank you for sharing, Rob, thats a neat and I am very jealous.

Cheers.
Mush

PS, adopt me, Pls!

Hi Robb
thanks for sharing. Nice puppy.

Could we see better pictures, please ? I would like to have a kind of reference. Therefore better pictures would be great.

These Garde du Corps helmets are becoming rarer and rarer. And more expensive than ever before. I know two examples. One is in bad condition, the other one is nicer, but missing the liner. Both are definitely not for sale, so I would keep it.

German para helmets are nowadays made in Czech. Keep that in mind.

All the best;
Jerry

Hi Jerry,

You also have a GdC kurassier metalhelme? And you have 2 of them? Man! That is soooo unfair! 1219.gif LoL

Yeah, GdC is getting rarer nowadays, and the price are escalating.

Hi Rob

And like Jerry, could you pls post bigger pics?

I might be mistaken abt your GdC, I just notice that you have a 'step visor' and a 'reinforced rear spine' which are the charateristics of a private purchase helmets, and your Garde star is defined, just like a private purcahse (eigentums/extra) one, definately not EM standards.

And another tell tale is the liner's 'sweat band', no EM helmets would have that, as EM GdC/Leib-Kurassier-Rgt would have a standard 'tongue' like liner, just like my M15 Kurassier metalhelme, whereas yours is obviously nothing like it, the silk/cloth sweat band shows it.
And one more thing, are the rossettes original to the body? Those are definately officer's rossetes.
And on your pics number 5, which shows the interior, there are 4 sets of drilled holes, which correspond with the officer's clove leaf spike base on pic number 2, I think.

Hence, I strongly believe that yours is an Eigentums/private purchase metalhelme, and perhaps it was an officer's one after all, as the rosettes, the 4 sets of holes for the clove leaf spike base are all there! exct0006.gif 00009176.gif

Was the parade eagle already attached to the helme when you got it? I think the GdC helmet fits with your spare officer clove leaf spike base. And its the EM parade eagle that is the spare 'spike top'. All you need is an officer fluted spike top for the clove leaf spike base.

I never have a GdC helmet before "hint, hint" 1219.gif , and these observations are from book of references alone, but I really belive that you have a nice officer's GdC/Leib-Kurassier Rgt kurassier metalhelme, and there were only a handful of officers serving in those 2 regiments at ANY GIVEN time.

Wow, imagine, you have an officer GdC/Leib Kurassier-regt and all that for 140 pound?? Double darn. bash.gif

Congrats, Rob! exct0006.gif cheers.gif Now I am REALLY REALLY jealous! Cellar is not a bad idea tho....LoL

Hope this helps,
Mush

Mush ,you are right the Eagle came in the same lot as the helmet but wasnt connected to it ,the spike base fits perfectly , have you got a spare spike ? . I cant seem to post large pics ,the cockades came with it as did the trefoil brasses ,one of them wont come off I think I cross threaded the nut (oops) I will take the other off and post some pics of whats behind it . I will post a pic of my Currasier helmet as well .Rob. cheers.gif Prep.gif

Hi Rob,

Man, you are full of surprises! Now where on earth does the 'other' kurassier metalhelme appears from, eh??
Suddenly you have 2 now. Pls dont tell me that you have it for a bargain price AGAIN
cluebat.gif

1st things 1st tho,
Thank you so much for the detailed pics, they are lovely! 1219.gif

I am not an expert on these but i will try my best to answer depending on my observation.
I am convinced that what you have is an officer GdC, the "trefoil brasses " that you mentioned is actually a pair of officer rossetes, an EM only uses a M91 type sidepost. Like your 'other' kurassier metalhelme, darn, the term 'other' gets on my nerve... bash.gif LoL

And the pair of Prussian and Reich kokarden are officer's, i dont really understand why there are 2 holes on each 4 sets of holes for the spike base....One reason could be that, well, there are known cases of 'cheaper' private purchase helmets, including pickelhaubes, some officers are not so well to do, hence they will opted for a used helmet as they were cheaper, hence the extra holes etc but still belonging to the same regiment as the extra holes correspond with the presumed 'original' holes.

The Garde wappen is DEFINATELY private purchase, the details are very pronounced, whereas the EM is not so defined.

Pls note the reinforced 'rear spine' directly behind the 4 sets of holes for the spike base, those rear spine only exists on officer's helmet and the step visor is also the distinctive mark for officer's kurassier metalhelme.

But once again, these are my observation, I could be wrong.

Here is Ken's site, he has an EM GdC with parade eagle metalhelme, its a good example for comparison on why I am very convinced that yours is officer's. Compare the his visor, the rossettes, the non existent rear spine, garde wappen, liner etc with yours.
Judging from the color, the spike base, the welding etc, your parade eagle is EM, and like you said, it came with the package.....ooooh, I am sooooo jealous! bash.gif A parade eagle alone will cost more than the 140 Pound..... dry.gif

As for your 'Other' metalhelme, thats something very new for me, its an eye opener, why does it has a shorter lobster tail rear neck guard? Why does it has a dragoon/Jaeger zu Pfferde prussian eagle wappen? is it an older kurassier like the 1862 version?
I need to browse thro the books again and will get back to you asap, this is so exciting.

By the way, I will keep my eyes open to find an officer fluted spike for you, even if I dont have aGdC, but i will be very happy and proud if my friend has it. 00009176.gif

So sorry for the long reply. You have an amazing collection of kurassier metalhelme that I could only dream of. exct0006.gif cheers.gif

Hope this helps,

Hi Mush thanks for all that info ,it must have looked very splendid in its hayday ,the other helmet I bought at Sothebys in London in 1992 , I agree its a weird eagle plate but thats the one that came with it ,attached is a pic of the Catalouge and description .It was the first thing I bought at auction and being Sothebys it was quite scary .Rob. cheers.gif

Hi Rob,

I am really at loss now bash.gif , I cant find any references abt yr 'other' kurassier metalhelme, its a beautiful helmet, do doubt abt it.
I am really puzzled by the short rear neck guard, the only reference I have is its a non combatant helmet, something like a Prussian Stabsordonnanzen guys.
I thought that could be a older version of the kurassier helmet, but the 1862 kurassier metalhelme is more heavier and bulky looking, like Tony's

http://www.kaisersbunker.com/dunkelblau/helmets/dbh46.htm

But why t he Jaeger zu Pfferde like wappen then?

I have to ask the big guns now....hopefully the have the answer, you bought it for 300 pound? Darn, it seems that you have all the nice stuffs for a nice price. And you bought it from Sotheby's? Thats neat.

Its a neat and beautiful helmet, Rob, love it!

Cheers
