Hi Chaps,

Just some fun info.

Bavarian was known as the 'rival' of the Prussian, infact the Bavarian was the last state/kingdom to adopt the pickelhaube, its arty regts infact adopted the kugelspike in 1916 (!).
Hence Bavarian haubes tend to be of a higher quality than its Prussian counterpart, having a thicker leather and well crafted Wappen.
I just realized (again) how true it is, check out my Bavarian officer (pvt purcahse) pre 1896 wappen.
The pre 1896 wappen is more complex and detailed, whereas the post 1896 wappen is much simpler, easier and faster to produce. Notice the details and its superb craftmanship.

The pre 1896 wappen is large and has oakleaves that intertwine with the Lions' legs.

Hope this helps and cheers
Mush

Notice the Lions' details, even the Lions crowns are well crafted and detailed.

The bayern coat of arms and its details, notice the 2 small lions in the crest.Even the bigger lions' claws are superbly crafted.

I love Bavarians...you are right on about the quality. Here is a scan of a 1yr. volunteer em helmet I owned in the mid 90's. Sorry for the picture quality. This helmet had its conical case. A Japanese fellow bought this helmet from me in K.C. shortly after this shot was taken.

Hi Robert,
Thats a nice Bavarian OYV you have there! And it has a carrying case, too? Thats really awesome! Do you still have any more pics of yr Bavarian OYV? OVY haubes intrique me a lot.
Your Bavarian has the post 1890 wappen, what abt the liner? Do you have any surviving pics?
Btw, why all of my posts are merged together? They were meant to be divided, not compiled into one heap of messy pics.

Well, here we go again: 00009176.gif

Compare the bayern wappen with the my Prussians and Wurttemberg private purchase wappens, even tho the 4 wappens are private purcahse, the Bayern clearly outshines them.
The Prussian wappen is the Grenadier Regt 9, Colberg.Gren-Regt -- (the 12 oldest Prussian Infantry Regt were designated Grenadiers and were allowed to wear the Guard/Garde wappen without the garde star, and Rgt 9 was granted to wear the honour ribbon (bandeau) Colberg 1807 as being the descendant of the troops which succesfully defended the city of Colberg in 1807 against Napoleon's attack), the other is the 1867 Prussian Line officer wappen and a Wurttemberg OYV wappen.

The bayern with the spike removed for trichter/parade bush and for easy carrying.

That's the only shot I have...and were it not for a friend with a camera at the show, I wouldn't have it. It was an immaculate piece. Had a delicate lt.brown, goatskin liner stamped 56 as I recall. No unit markings.

Yes, the helmet seems to be solid and sturdy, and it came with the carrying case, thats really neat!
Was it expensive?
Btw, do you still have neat and unique pics like the one you posted? 00009176.gif

Thanks Mush. I bought that Bavarian for $600 at the Max show in Pittsburgh and sold it about 2 yrs later $850....that was back in the 90's. Not many shots to salvage from my collecting hay day mostly bits and pieces of DAK items.
