Hello,
Here is my M1895 prussian picklehaube, according to the marking it should belong to a reserve soldier but the plate is the standard one.
Any comments welcome.
Thank you
Phil.

HI Phil,

You have nice haube there! The shell is solid and the brass trimmings are very nice! And I am quite surprised to find that you have the Reserve IR 25 haube, whereas my very first haube is the 'active' IR 25 haube!
Yes, you are right, your haube is marked to the RIR 25 3rd Battalion, there are some marks which appear striked out, I cant really read the numbers tho, perhaps the striked out numbers are the Regt and the Battalion numbers of the owner active regt (there are 'III B' marks, same 3rd Batt during active service perhaps?)Basically the EM haube is govt property, and when the owner entered into reservist status, the clothing depot re-marked it again into the RIR status.I am learning something new again, today! naughty.gif
And yes, a reservist wappen should have the reservist cross and the prussian eagle wappen should be devoid of the bandeau and its motto (Mit Gott fur Koenig und Vaterland), the motto should appears on the reservist cross instead.Well, perhaps the owner just didnt change the wappen into the reservist wappen.
Thats one killer haube, nicely marked to a Prussian Infantry Regt.Very very nice! Would love to have that! cheers.gif
I am attaching the pics of my very 1st haube, the 25 Inf Rgt 'Von Lutzow', perhaps the owner of our haubes served together in the same 25 Rgt at a certain time =hug.gif
And I agree with Robert, your haubes are nicely photographed, too. How do you minimize those annoying shadows?
Pls keep posting those amazing haubes! You have 2 very nice haubes!

Cheers,
Mush

Hi Musashi,
Always the best info and kind words, thank you very much.
I will check the markings on my picklehaube and will tell you.
Your spiked helmet and cover are amazing, congratulations, did they come together ?
I also have a cover and will submitt, very soon.
Concerning the pics I try the natural sunlight or a low level flash light with a dark green or bleu background and it seems working good.
Best regards

Hi Philippe,

Yes, the uberzug and the helmet came together, I bought it some years ago and it was my very first. It was Tony der Kaiser who guided me in buying it.
You have canvas covers, too? You are so full of suprises! Pls post them.

What do you mean by low level flashlight? Do you use flashligh during the day photo shooting, too?

Cheers,
Mush

Fantastic! Uberzuges are so cool.

Hi Mush,
My digital camera has 3 levels of flash light so according to the sun light and the position of the headgear I use the lowest level of flash light: As seen in the pic N°2 and sometimes it works very well.
But I really prefer a little cloudy weather to take pics.
Hope it can help.
I haveonly one cover a tan one with a red number painted on. I passed on (some years ago) a green one and always regret it.
Best regards

Hi Phil,

Actually this pic is for the 'republican era haube' thread, but its a good example abt the reservist wappen, the words "Mitt Gott fur Koenig und vaterland" is not found on the wappen, but on the cross itself.
Darn, I never have a reservist haube before.

Cheers,
Mush

Hi Mush,
Nice one. Do you mean the eagle does not bear the motto "Mitt got fur koenig und vaterland" ? So it means the reserve troops eagles are special ones ?

Hi Phil,

So sorry for the late reply, yes, ALL reservist wappens do not have the motto on the wappen, but they have it on the cross instead, and this applies to ALL wappen (Prussian, Bavarian, Saxon, Wurttemberg, Hessen, Baden, etc).
They are nt special actually, but I dont seems to see them as much as the 'active' haubes, logically speaking, there should be a lot of them as active soldiers automatically went into reservist status after 2 years and thereafer into Landwehr status (kind of 3rd tier soldiers), Based on the number of reservists and landwehr soldiers one would expect there to have been more crosses, but why there are nt many reservist haubes ard?

My explanation is that perhaps not everyone is willing to PAY for a wappen change over, I dont know is this makes sense or nt, tho. This may applicable to private purchase helmets only, nt for EM haubes, and the rarety of the presence of the reservist wappen is such a mystery.

Will dig up more references.
Hope this helps,
Mush

Hi Phil,

Apparantly I am wrong abt the Reserve Cross, well, nt ALL crosses have the motto (bandeaux) on it, as some Wappens do nt have any bandeaux at all, like Saxon for example, Saxom wappen has no motto, hence the cross has no motto and its placed BEHIND the Saxon cress.

Whereas Wurttemberg still has the motto on the wappen, NOT on the cross, the cross is plain. So does Bavarian crosses, the motto stays on the wappen.
Hence the only states that has motto on the crosses instead of their wappens are: Prussia, Baden, Hessen, the Mecklenburgs and the other small states such as: Thuringen, Oldenburg etc.

But some Reserve officer's wappen still maintain their motto (for Baden, Prussia, Hessen etc, yet they have the crosses with the motto, hence 2 mottos, on the wappen and on the crosses.
The reason could be the price, its much simpler and cheaper to just drilled holes on the wappen and attached the cross for 1 Mark, instead of changing the entire mottoless wappen with cross for 15 Marks.

And speaking of Reserve Haube, very stupid of me, I DO have a reserve haube, its a Saxon Officer Reserve haube! Voila, this is my Saxon Reserve officer haube. Notice that the saxon has no motto and the cross is placed behind the Saxon crest.

But this still dont answer the question on why there are so few Reserve EM haubes with crosses around, will dig up more references again.

You brought up a very interesting topic here, but a very confusing one, darn.

Hope this helps,
Mush

Wow Mush !!
Congratulations a very nice one.
These officer haubes are (fortunately for the collectors) underconsidered as their value goes less than some WWII german helmets and they are more beautiful than a steel helmet.
You're right Mush, we did not find the answered to the question concerning the reserves haubes but the thread is open.
Phil.

Hi Phil,

Just for fun, there is another Prussian Rgt 25 haube on ebay, its a M15 this time. So we have 3 Rgt 25 haubes now, your Rgt 25 Reservist, mine and this one, an M15 rgt 25,dont really know abt its originality tho, need to have a look again, overall it seems ok.
I was thinking, could these 3 Rgt 25 haubes served together in the same Rgt? But yours would be either an officer/NCO or senior soldier by the time the M15 was introduced.
